Which genres actually belong on a phone

June 18, 2026 · Mikkel Sørensen

After years of this I've got opinions about which genres truly fit a phone and which ones are quietly wishing they were on something with buttons. Touch controls are brilliant for some things and clumsy for others, and knowing the difference saves you a lot of frustration.

Puzzle, casual, and strategy games are naturals. Tapping, dragging, and pausing to think all map perfectly to a touchscreen, and these genres rarely fight your hardware. Card games and management sims fit the same mold — slow, deliberate, happy to be played in short bursts.

Action and racing can work, but only when the developer takes touch seriously. Good ones give you big, responsive controls and sensitivity options; lazy ones just slap a virtual gamepad on screen and hope. RPGs sit in the middle — turn-based ones shine, while real-time combat can get fiddly.

None of this means you can't enjoy a genre outside its comfort zone. It just means you should read how the controls are described before you commit, because a great game with the wrong control scheme can still be a bad time on the bus.
